Prof. Netta Dorchin is the chief curator of entomology at the Steinhardt Museum and an associate professor in the School of Zoology. Her main interests include insect taxonomy and systematics, insect–plant interactions, evolutionary ecology, and biological control of invasive weeds. She received her PhD from Tel Aviv University in 2003, which focused on the systematics and ecology of gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) on Chenopodiaceae. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where she studied gall-inducing wasps as weed biocontrol agents of invasive plants, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Bucknell University, Pennsylvania, focusing on the systematics and evolutionary ecology of goldenrod gall midges. In 2007 she moved to Bonn, Germany, where she was the curator of Diptera and later the head of the Arthropod Department in Museum Alexander Koenig. She returned to Tel Aviv University in 2011 to take her current position. Netta is a member of the council for the International Congresses of Dipterology and one of a handful of experts on the family Cecidomyiidae worldwide, having published numerous papers on their phylogeny and systematics. She discovered and described dozens of new gall-midge species and genera from her fieldwork in Southern Africa, North America, Europe, and Israel, and supervised studies on diverse insect groups including fruit flies, gall wasps, bees, parasitic wasps, mayflies and ants.
