Prof. Yossi Yovel

Curator of Terrestrial Vertebrates, the Steinhardt Museum

Professor at the School of Zoology, Tel Aviv University

Prof. Yossi Yovel is a curator of Terrestrial Vertebrates at the Steinhardt Museum and an Professor at the School of Zoology, Tel Aviv University (TAU). He received his PhD (summa cum laude) from the University of Tuebingen, Germany, in 2008, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Weizmann Institute in 2010 and at the University of Chicago in 2011.
His main interest is the connection between neuroscience and ecology, employing bats as his main animal model.

Yossi recently discovered how bats recognize complex objects according to echoes, revealing a new optimal sensory strategy in the echolocation of fruit bats and suggesting that, contrary to previously believed, many fruit bats use echolocation. His current research focuses on bridging gaps between neuroscience and ecology by studying behavior and its neural correlates in the field and in the lab, where he studies the brain. His lab specializes in developing miniature sensors to follow animals in the wild, as well as in computational analysis of behavior, modeling, acoustics, and signal processing.

Yossi is the recipient of several awards, most notably the Alon Scholarship of the Council for Higher Education, 2012; the Sieratzki Prize for Advances in Neuroscience, 2011; and the PhD thesis award of the Reinhold-und-Maria-Teufel-Foundation, 2009. He is a member of the Israeli Young Academy. He has authored numerous scientific publications in journals like Science, Nature Ecology and Evolution, PNAS, Current Biology, PLoS Biology and Science Advances.
