Dr. Amnon Freidberg, Curator of Diptera (emeritus) at the Steinhardt Museum’s division of entomology; received his PhD from the Department of Zoology, Tel Aviv University, in 1978. His dissertation examined reproductive behavior and reproductive isolation in fruit flies (Tephritidae) and was supervised by Prof. J. Kugler. Dr. Freidberg’s main research interests focus on the entomofauna of Israel, especially Diptera (flies); Afrotropical Tephritidae (in particular Schistopterini, Myopitini, Adramini and others); and various Acalyptrate taxa (Diptera), such as Carnidae and Asteiidae. Amnon believes in the importance of developing the collection of Israeli insects through continuing and augmenting current collecting efforts, with special attention to hitherto neglected groups, such as moths and parasitic wasps; acquiring “orphaned” Israeli collections, such as neglected private and institutional holdings; accommodating experts who would identify material from the Museum collections and publish papers based on their studies at the Museum; and supporting students who conduct faunistic surveys of particular groups. He is especially interested in public outreach through popular lectures, exhibitions, and developing the live insect collection. He has authored or co-authored four books and over 100 scientific articles.
