Dr. Ernst Uzhansky
Acoustical Oceanographer
Assistant Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering and the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History, Tel Aviv University
Dr. Ernst Uzhansky is an Acoustical Oceanographer at the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History and an Assistant Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tel Aviv University. He earned his PhD in Marine Geosciences from the University of Haifa under the supervision of Prof. Boris Katsnelson. Dr. Uzhansky completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technion (Israel) with Prof. Izhak Boucher, the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University (Canada) with Prof. David Barclay, and the Department of Physics at the Naval Postgraduate School (USA) with Prof. Oleg Godin.
Dr. Uzhansky’s research specializes in acoustical oceanography and underwater acoustics. His work encompasses the development of physical and analytical models for forward sound propagation, as well as the application of inverse methods—specifically acoustic tomography for monitoring ocean currents and geoacoustic inversion for seafloor characterization. Furthermore, his research addresses marine sound pollution and the development of remote acoustic sensing to evaluate the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activity on marine species. Leveraging a multidisciplinary background in physics and engineering, Dr. Uzhansky utilizes state-of-the-art experimental methods, such as fiber-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), and advanced signal processing techniques for marine research and marine ecology monitoring.
