Dr. Amir Perelberg is an expert in applied ecology, nature conservation and biodiversity monitoring. Serves as the Manager of HaMaarag since early 2026. In this capacity, Amir leads HaMaarag's initiatives for monitoring and assessing the state of Israel's ecosystems and biodiversity, while working to make up-to-date scientific knowledge accessible to policymakers, practitioners and the general public.
Amir brings about two decades of experience in leading nature and landscape surveys and in formulating policy documents and strategic plans for the conservation of nature and open landscapes. He holds a Ph.D. in Behavioral Ecology and Psychobiology from the University of Haifa, where he researched cooperative behavior in dolphins; and an M.Sc. (magna cum laude ) from Tel Aviv University, which focused on the reintroduction project of the Persian fallow deer. Furthermore, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem studying cooperative behavior in chimpanzees, and also holds an MBA from Tel Aviv University. Prior to his appointment as Manager of HaMaarag, Amir served as the Scientific Manager and Deputy Manager of the Open Landscape Institute – OLI (‘DESHE’) , where he also managed the Nature and Landscape Surveys Unit for nearly a decade.
Throughout his career, he has served as a senior ecological consultant for government ministries, drainage authorities and environmental organizations, and has co-authored most of Israel's national "State of Nature" reports. In addition, Amir lectures at various academic institutions in Israel on topics related to ecology, sustainable management, and environmentally sensitive planning.
